Summer 2016 was Catherine's second summer supporting the University of Toronto's forestry research project within the Lake Simcoe Watershed.

Catherine will stay on working with UofT as a reserach assistant through Fall and Winter 2017, where she will assist with data management and report writing.

Responsible for leading a crew in terrestrial monitoring within various natural heritage features including grasslands, woodlands, and wetlands within public and private lands of the Lake Simcoe watershed (southern region).

Used the‘Vegetative Sampling Protocol (VSP)’ to conduct vegetation sampling and field data collection including tree measurements, tree and understory plant species abundance, soil samples and wildlife observations.

Field Work:

Assisted with ‘Muskellunge Spawning Habitat Enhancement Project’ on Lake Simcoe which involved:
-Shoreline planting of various native aquatic plant species (bulrushes, lily pads etc.)
-Evaluating conditions and suitability of candidate planting sites
-Fish and aquatic plant identification
-Monitoring water quality – dissolved oxygen, temperature, turbidity
-Operating 18 ft. jon boat & attaching trailer
-Assessing the near-shore small-bodied fish community using seine net
-Assisting with care and storage of aquatic plants before planting
-Talking with local residents and property owners, responding to inquiries regarding project

Deploying data loggers into stormwater ponds for endangered red sided dace (Clinostomus elongatus) habitat monitoring (Morningside & Brampton, ON)
